Artist Statement

I create my work through the lens of my African ancestry which informs my dance practices through exploring repetition, groove and recontextualization of traditionally accepted forms of the body. Within this frame I am considering how moving as a collective or in unison can reflect the ways a community can uplift each individual within it.

I am also exploring sonic liveness. Sonic liveness is the way in which music enlivens a space and as a result, enlivens the bodies inhabiting that space. What does the energy transmitted from human to instrument communicate to our ears? As dancers how are we able to respond in an attempt to become the sound the instruments are producing?
